2008 version of Apple Cup full of worms (AP)
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 14:20:55 PST-

Washington head coach Tyronne Willingham walks out of the tunnel to the field before the last home NCAA game against UCLA in Seattle, Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008. Willingham, who is leaving as head coach after the season, takes his 0-10 team to meet cross-state rivals Washington State, who are 1-10, in the annual Apple Cup Saturday.

How about this for a marketing pitch: Come see the two worst teams in major college football. Try selling tickets to that. But that's the task facing folks at Washington (0-10) and Washington State Football (1-10) this week leading up to Saturday's rotten Apple Cup in Pullman -- a battle of ineptitude that will truly go down in history.

Washington State Football Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 22:36:49 PST-

For many Washington State Football fans, the season can always be saved with a win over rival Washington.

That may never be the case more so than this year as the Cougars have set records for futility, namely having already allowed the most points in Pac-10 history at 533.

But the Cougars, who are 1-10, could put a nice capper on the year by beating the similarly woeful Huskies, who enter the game at 0-10 and having lost 12 in a row dating to last season.

WSU first-year coach Paul Wulff, who played in a few Apple Cups while a center for the Cougars from 1986-89, said the rivalry should be enough to get his players excited, even in an exceedingly down season such as this.

"You know what, it's a big game," he said.

Huskies getting ready to face woeful Cougars (AP)
Mon, 17 Nov 2008 16:49:25 PST-There's still a little passion left in Washington's otherwise forgettable season. Just mention rival Washington State. When asked about this Saturday's Apple Cup against the equally miserable Cougars, the seventh word out of linebacker Donald Butler's mouth on Monday was "hate." It might be the most passionate remark from any Washington player in weeks, and came from someone who grew up in...

Arizona State defeats Washington State Football 31-0 (AP)
Sat, 15 Nov 2008 17:28:23 PST-

Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson, right, watches a field goal attempt against Washington State Football during the third quarter of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 in Tempe, Ariz.

Rudy Carpenter threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns as Arizona State defeated Washington State Football 31-0 on Saturday. Carpenter, a senior, has 80 career touchdown passes, third in Pac-10 history. The Sun Devils (4-6, 3-4 Pac-10) have won back-to-back games and kept their slim bowl hopes alive. Arizona State posted its first shutout since a 19-0 victory over top-ranked Nebraska on Sept.

PRACTICE: Lopina return, Cougs get defensive
Thu, 20 Nov 2008 06:46:01 GMT-PULLMAN -- Kevin Lopina and Brandon Gibson returned to the practice field Wednesday and while that passing combination found some success, the Wazzu defense ruled the day. Indeed, DE Kevin Kooyman turned in the play of the day, while a number of Cougars coming off the injury list got in some practice time. And things got a little chippy when one of the stop corps made contact with the quarterback.

2008 version of Apple Cup full of worms
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 22:26:10 GMT-How about this for a marketing pitch: Come see the two worst teams in major college football. Try selling tickets to that. But that's the task facing folks at Washington (0-10) and Washington State Football (1-10) this week leading up to Saturday's rotten Apple Cup in Pullman - a battle of ineptitude that will truly go down in history. "We're the punch line," said Washington offensive coordinator Tim Lappano, who previously coached at Washington State Football as well.

UW 101: Apple Cup
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 22:18:04 GMT-THE 101st APPLE CUP will feature a Washington team mired in the thick of an extended period of futility -- they have lost 45 of their past 57 games, including the last 12 straight. They haven't had a winning season since 2002. Since 2000, the Huskies have averaged 4 wins and 8 losses per year. But none of that compares to this year's Huskies.
